2019 Portland Oregon Reunion
October 2nd to 6th, 2019
We are pleased to announce that the 2019 group reunion will be held in Portland Oregon October 2nd to the 6th, 2019. Portland, Oregon’s largest city, sits on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Hood. It’s known for its parks, bridges and bicycle paths, as well as for its eco-friendliness and its microbreweries and coffeehouses. Named after Portland, Maine, the Oregon settlement began to be populated in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. There is so much to do in the “City of Roses” that we are assured of having a great time. Stay tuned to upcoming newsletters, this web site and the “Kids” facebook page for updates!
Portland fun fact:
Portland fun fact:
In the 1840s Portland was initially referred to as "Stumptown" and "The Clearing" because of the many trees cut down to allow for its growth. Asa Lovejoy and Francis W. Pettygrove each owned half of “The Clearing.” Both men wanted to name the new city after their respective hometowns (Lovejoy's being Boston, and Pettygrove's, Portland, Maine). Both refused to budge and the name was settled with a coin toss that Pettygrove won in a series of two out of three tosses, thereby providing Portland with its namesake. The coin used for this decision, now known as the Portland Penny, is on display in the headquarters of the Oregon Historical Society.
